what is gold-filled?
All about gold filled
Counter-intuitive to it’s name, gold filled isn’t filled with anything. Gold filled is made from a thick layer of gold that is bonded to a brass core using heat and pressure. This layer of gold is much thicker than gold plated or vermeil items, which both wear off over time. The layer of gold on gold filled is 5 to 10 times thicker than on gold plated items, and 15 to 25 times thicker than pieces that are gold electroplated. With gold filled, the gold won’t wear off over time, and when cared for can last a lifetime! It’s a great option for people who have sensitive skin, because if you are able to wear 14k gold, you can wear 14k gold filled.
I love working with 14k gold filled because you get the impact of 14k gold at a fraction on the price! Additionally, the brass core gives the piece more structural integrity, because gold on it’s own is a very soft metal, and wouldn’t be rigid enough for me to be able to create the geometric pieces I love. I wear my 14k gold filled rings and earrings everyday, and even after a thousand hand-washings and showers, the pieces look as good as new!
